雲丹是迄今所知的阿壩縣第44位自焚的藏人。過去十年中，共有155名自焚藏人為外界知曉。報導引述西藏之聲說法指出，近年來採取這一慘烈抗議方式的藏人逐漸減少，原因之一是「中共對自焚倖存者與他們的親友所實施的連帶打壓。」

中國政府說，自焚事件與當局所說的「達賴集團」的煽動教唆直接相關。但藏人行政中央早已表明不鼓勵藏人以這種方式表達抗議。此外，日前四川石渠縣兩名年輕藏人因為高呼「西藏獨立」口號、拋撒傳單、在微信發文被警方拘捕。這個月早些時候，當地出現大量寫有「為西藏獨立抗爭」字樣的傳單，有6名僧人先後因此被捕。
