呼吁习近平下台的湖南衡阳异见人士王美余在看守所死亡事件这个星期持续发酵。当局提出以近300万元的“封口费”作补偿，王美余的家人据信已同意接受条件。

流亡芬兰的前中国政治犯李方星期五（9月27日）对美国之音说，早上一位消息人士给他发私信说，衡阳市政府答应赔偿王美余一家298万元，条件是家属放弃追究死因。

这位消息人士还说，王美余的律师当天上午去探视了王美余一家。当时，王美余的遗孀曹曙霞不在家。她去了衡阳市解放军169医院。王美余的尸体存放在该院的太平间。赔偿的事情是王美余的母亲肖湘荣告诉律师的。肖湘荣还说，家属已经在赔偿书上签了字。

出于安全考虑，李方无法透露这位消息人士的姓名，但他表示，该消息来源绝对可靠。

英国《卫报》当天的报道证实了这位消息人士的说法。王美余的母亲告诉该报，当局提出给家人200多万元的赔偿。

王美余，1981年生于湖南衡阳。2018年夏天，他在湖南省公安厅门前等多个公共场所举牌，要求“习近平、李克强等立即下台，让位全民选举”。今年7月8日，他在长沙火车站被抓捕，两天后送往衡阳市看守所刑事拘留，罪名是“寻衅滋事”。

此前，王美余也曾因维权事件受到当局骚扰。“三天三夜滴水都未沾，再用电针折磨我两个来小时，害得我口吐鲜血，连意识都快脱离躯体”，近日中国公民运动披露了王美余去年11月10日通过社交媒体与朋友联络的信息。

星期一（9月23日）王美余在看守所离奇死亡事件曝光后，美国之音在第一时间联系了到王美余的遗孀曹曙霞。当天她在十几名警察的包围下见到了丈夫的尸体。她觉得自己认不出丈夫了：王美余的遗体眼睛含泪、咬牙切齿的模样，头下有血迹。

曹曙霞坚信，丈夫是被“整死的”。她在电话对美国之音哭诉：“中国太黑暗，连一个平民百姓都不放过”。她对美国之音说，一定会为丈夫的死讨个说法。

目前，曹曙霞一家人被严格控制，楼下被一群人围着，出门有人尾随，电话已无法接通。

几天来衡阳看守所和衡阳市政府的电话也无人接听。

王美余生前的朋友和支持者也收到警告，不得卷入此案，也不得接受外媒采访，否则会坐牢。湖南维权人士吕程据信因为关注此案已被公安控制，自一天前起与外界失联。

星期三晚间，长沙维权人士陈燕慧（网名迷迭香）和前往衡阳调查王美余猝死案的律师谢阳被六名荷枪实弹的警察逮捕。当时他们正在酒店讨论案情。二人于星期四获释。

“一个徐纯合，一个雷洋，一个王美余，不同的阶层，相同的都是被公权力所害，却都是一样的结局。此国，无论你处在任何一方，被杀戮，都无一幸免，” 陈燕慧在推特上说。

45岁的访民徐纯合2015年在黑龙江省安庆县火车站被警察开枪打死。中国官方说，他袭击了警察，但拒绝提供监控录像。 当时他的面前站着他的三个孩子和81岁的母亲。

29岁的环保工作者雷洋曾获中国人民大学硕士学位，2016年在北京警方所称的打击卖淫嫖娼行动中离奇死亡。 涉及雷洋案的五名警务人员被免于起诉。雷洋去世时，他的女儿才刚刚出世。

王美余身后留下一双儿女，儿子10岁，女儿刚满9岁。曹曙霞说，他们很害怕，“不知道爸爸为什么就没了”。

陈燕慧认为，王美余案的后果才是“最最可怕的”。日后如果再有人提出反对意见，那么被弄死“也不过尔尔”。 

“王美余”三个字毫无悬念地被中国大陆封杀。但是几天来，他的名字在墙外引发震动。

一位来自中国大陆的网民说，初读到王美余之死的新闻时，觉得心中似乎毫无波动，后来去了一个香港论坛，看见港人都在议论纷纷，悼念烈士，“这才惊觉，我竟然变成了党国想要我变成的样子，麻木、冷漠、愤世嫉俗，宁可摆出一副明哲保身的老江湖嘴脸，也不愿意承认自己愤怒、绝望、无能为力。”
