中共第一代黨魁毛澤東被指是世界三大「殺人魔頭」之一，中共竊政後，毛發動的各種政治運動，至少造成8000多萬中國人非正常死亡，毛曾大講死人的實用價值：「人要不滅亡那不得了。滅亡有好處，可以做肥料。」

1958年5月，「大躍進」在中共「八大」二次會議上拉開序幕，導致數千萬中國人非正常死亡。

毛澤東搞的大躍進主要內容是，大規模從蘇聯和東歐進口以軍工為核心的重工業項目。這就意味著食品大量出口。

當時毛澤東向赫魯曉夫賣昂貴的核潛艇技術設備時，赫魯曉夫問毛怎樣付費，毛的答覆是：蘇聯要多少食品，中國就可以出口多少。

為了從農民手中奪糧給蘇聯，毛宣稱1958年有了神話般的大豐收。在毛示意下，各省領導紛紛宣布各自省內的糧食產量將會激增。

同年6月12日，《人民日報》聲稱：河南省遂平縣衛星農業社「小麥每畝產量達到了3530斤」，相當於正常實際產量的10倍，被稱作「衛星田」。

很快全中國出現了不少「衛星田」，而那些不肯睜眼說瞎話的基層官員被批判撤職，讓位給敢吹大牛皮的人，於是天文數字般的高產充斥全國報刊。廣西省環江縣甚至出現了畝產13萬斤的新聞。

當年7月底，《人民日報》社論甚至宣布：「只要我們需要，要生產多少，就可生產出多少糧食來。」

為了從農民手裡擠出來糧食，1959年1月，毛澤東稱：「中國地大物博，只有那麼一點田，但是人口多。沒有飯吃怎麼辦？無非少吃一點。」「吃那麼多把肚子脹那麼大幹啥，像漫畫上外國資本家那樣。」

在農民無論如何也交不出來糧食時，毛一而再，再而三地指責農民和基層幹部「瞞產私分」。於是全國各個鄉村到處開始開展「逼糧會」，對農民捆、打、吊。

《毛澤東：鮮為人知的故事》一書記載，1958年11月，毛對中共高層講，除了「大辦水利」以外，「還有各種各樣的任務，鋼鐵、銅、鋁、煤碳、運輸、加工工業、化學工業，需要人很多，這樣一來，我看搞起來，中國非死一半人不可，不死一半也要死三分之一或者十分之一，死5千萬人。」

毛甚至還大講死人的實用價值。1958年12月，毛在中共八屆六中全會說：「人要不滅亡那不得了。滅亡有好處，可以做肥料。」

據《鄉村三十年》記載，有的地方人死了埋在田裡，上面種上莊稼。

紅旗出版社1994年2月出版了《中華人民共和國歷史紀實》中稱：「1959至1961年的大饑荒，中國非正常死亡和減少出生人口數，約4千萬人左右。」許多地區還發生人吃人慘劇。

海內外學者對餓死人數的估計在3千萬到4千5百萬之間。

財經雜誌曾發表署名楊奎松文章稱，毛澤東的看法是，戰爭死人多，但躲不過，該打就要打，死人多，勝利了就不是壞事；搞建設死些人也是必然的，要高速發展不可能不付一點代價，不能因為死幾個人就不去躍進了。

1950年，毛澤東發動「鎮反」運動，文件中說，「很多地方畏首畏尾，不敢大張旗鼓地殺反革命」。毛甚至批示說「在農村殺反革命，一般應超過人口比例千分之一……在城市一般應少於千分之一。」按當時中國6億人口計算，毛一道文件至少60萬人頭落地。

毛澤東被稱世界三大「殺人魔頭」之一。 希特勒屠殺了600萬猶太人，斯大林屠殺了1千2百萬俄國人，而毛澤東屠殺的中國人，至少達數千萬。

據《九評共產黨》一書揭露，中共建政後，毛澤東發動了諸如三反、五反、鎮反、土地改革、肅反、反右、「大躍進」造成的「大饑荒」、文化大革命等，致使一半以上的中國人受到過中共的迫害，估計有6千萬到8千萬人非正常死亡，超過人類兩次世界大戰死亡人數的總和。
